Carbon dioxide is a chemical compound occurring as an acidic colourless gas with a density about 53% higher than that of dry air. Carbon dioxide molecules consist of a carbon atom covalently double bonded to two oxygen atoms. It occurs naturally in Earth’s atmosphere as a trace gas

A colourless gas made up of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms O=C=O
It’s formed when carbon containing compounds burn in air e.g. oil and gas. Plants use CO2 to build themselves and release oxygen as a by product.
